A green material can support a purchase, but an environmental attribute does not establish a price premium. A stronger opportunity arises when it improves an experience, procurement requirement or lifetime cost that the buyer values—and that improvement can be substantiated.
Public sources checked on 24 October 2026. Research informs the mechanism and company disclosures illustrate implementation constraints. The proposed market test is Mgreen Lab’s editorial framework, not a reported client result.
1. Translate the attribute into a purchasing task
Start with the payer and the job being purchased. A consumer may care about feel, odour, durability or repair. Procurement may require traceable documents, dependable delivery and consistent quality. The same resin faces different acceptance conditions in gifts, food-contact parts and equipment housings.
Frame the proposition as a testable comparison: under the same use conditions, which experiences or performance measures are preserved, improved or worsened? Feedstock origin alone does not establish lower product emissions, recyclability or greater safety.
2. Research: quality belongs in the explanation
The 2025 Scientific Reports study separates a 191-person intention survey from a physical-product experiment with 90 Italian students. The latter compared a recycled-leather bag and two re-recycled variants, including a finish difference, using real-incentive price-list choices and viewable, touchable samples.[1]
For a business, the useful implication is to test appearance, feel, function and credibility alongside the environmental message. Their relevance still needs validation for the specific category, audience and price. Experimental relationships do not establish a universal premium or long-term repeat purchasing.
The basic recycled-material bag had a higher mean willingness to pay than the more circular variants.[1] Circularity did not automatically deliver a price advantage—supporting a quality test before a premium claim.

| Purchased material category | % |

3. LEGO: substitution is also quality engineering
LEGO reports that 52% of materials purchased for bricks and elements in 2025 came from recycled and renewable sources, largely through mass balance. Its breakdown excludes colorants: 48% mass balance, 4% physical content and 48% virgin fossil-based.[2]
Mass balance mixes and allocates feedstock attributes through the supply chain; it does not mean every brick contains an identical physical recycled share. LEGO also emphasises safety, durability and compatibility between old and new bricks.[2] This illustrates substitution constraints, not an independent lifecycle assessment or evidence of a consumer premium.
4. Make the pilot capable of changing a decision
Establish a functional baseline: dimensions, finish, life, safety and production yield. Use a blinded comparison to observe experience differences, then evidence-based information to test the additional effect of the material story. Price tests should track payment, cancellations and returns rather than equating survey support with orders.
Predefine stop conditions. If the experience deteriorates, the claim lacks support or unit contribution is inadequate, reconsider the application before expanding promotion. Pilot size and duration depend on the category; no invented conversion rate or universal threshold is offered here.

Then test how information changes judgement and payment
Establish acceptable quality, then observe payments, cancellations, returns and unit contribution.
5. A premium can coexist with poor economics
Unit contribution must account for material, conversion, scrap, allocated testing, logistics, channel costs and expected returns. More colour variation or rework can make purchase-price comparisons misleading. If durability or lower weight reduces customer operating costs, validate that benefit against equivalent service.
Claims need a defined boundary. Turning a recycled-packaging attribute into a claim about the whole product can conceal other impacts. EU consumer green-transition rules restrict generic or mismatched environmental claims.[3] For EU sales, assess the actual statement and applicable national rules; this article is not a legal compliance finding.

6. Define a concrete professional engagement
Bound the work to one product, one customer group and one purchasing decision: assemble a material-claim evidence register, compare two prototypes, design user and paid-market tests, then decide whether to proceed, revise or stop. These deliverables are easier to accept than an open-ended request for green marketing.
Mgreen Lab can discuss material application, product experience and evidence communication. Start with the worksheet below; an initial discussion can use existing samples, the intended use and the decision at stake without disclosing sensitive formulations.

First establish acceptable function and quality, then customer understanding and paid demand, then sustainable delivery costs and claim evidence. The environmental attribute forms part of the value proposition; specific evidence determines whether it supports a viable business.

Mgreen Lab
